Betty Boop originally debuted in a Cartoon series called the Talkartoons in 1930.. She did, however, start out as a French Poodle. Luckily, in 1932, the animator realized that Betty's original look was quite ugly and redesigned her to be recognizably more human. Her ears evolved into hoop earrings and her fur became a bob haircut. After this, she had small roles in ten cartoons, but soon after, she was officially christened "Betty Boop" and starred in  "Stopping the Show" which became the first cartoon to be officially part of the Betty Boop series and not a Talkartoon. Betty's character was soon altered again to make her more sexy and feminine. The character's famous personality finally came to be in 1932 in the short film , "Minnie the Moocher". Betty Boop is the icon she is today because she was truly the first feminine cartoon character. She loved being a woman!. She wore short dresses with low cuts to show off her shapely body. The animators had to do this tastefully though to keep her character "pure" and girl like because she was only suppose to be 16 years old. Unfortunately, Betty's sexuality would eventually spell her doom because new censor ship laws were implemented in the mid 1930s which forced Betty to start wearing a longer skirt and much higher neckline. The animators struggled to keep Betty's cartoons exciting by pairing her with popular comic strip characters, but none of these films were reminiscent of her glory days. Betty Boop's cartoon career came to an end unfortunately in 1939. Surprisingly, Betty Boop's films were placed into television syndication in the 1950s and her popularity continued to soar well into the 1960s. In the 1970's, her short films were colorized and re-aired on TV as , "The Betty Boop Show".  In 1980, a collection of her short films  titled , "Hurray for Betty Boop" saw much success. Marketers jumped on this and Betty Boop merchandise featuring her earlier, sexier form, flooded the market. She has been going strong every since and has truly become an global icon with her signature phrase Boop oop a Doop!
